Visit Nuwakot Durbar

Nuwakot Durbar (palace) is a historic nine storied Newari style palace built in the 18th century. The place is on a hillock above the Trishuli Bazaar which was recently destroyed in the flash flood of August 2026. A trip to Nuwakot Durbar and a day hike from the Nuwakot Durbar to Suryagadhi Fort offers an exhilarating experience that combines a tour of less touristy hills of Nepal and view of the Himalayas with perspective into the history of Gurkhas with an opportunity to visit and help the flood victims.
Day 2: Hike to Suryagadhi Fort
Hike to Suryagadhi Fort is about 900 m and takes about 3 hours to reach. The trail traverses through the lush terraced fields and vibrant local villages with smiling and welcoming faces of the lesser Himalayan hills. The trail on the second half meanders through forests providing opportunities to observe diverse flora and fauna, while the sounds of nature create a serene atmosphere. View from the Suryegadi Fort is perched atop a 2000 m hill with layers of lush mountains and sweeping Trishuli River valley in the foreground of the snow peaks of Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges. The fort rich in history serves as a reminder of the region's strategic importance in the Nepal Tibet trade from where many Buddhist masters including Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) travelled to Tibet.
