Nepal Flood and its impact on treks and Tibet Tour
The recent floods in Nepal have significantly impacted the tourism sector of Nepal. Many tourists visiting Mt Kailash and Lhasa have been stranded as the highway was badly damaged and bridges swept away. There is no immigration and custom at the moment.
According to sources, avalanches on the Tibetan side caused the flash flood that ravaged many towns and infrastructures along the Trishuli River. This disruption not only claimed local lives but is also likely to affect tourism of the Langtang National Park for the upcoming season. As a result, there might be a noticeable decline in the number of visitors, which further exacerbates the economic challenges faced by communities dependent on trekking. The long-term effects may include a shift in tourist patterns and a need for improved infrastructure to mitigate future disasters.

- Rescuers are looking for survivors after a massive flash flood on the Nepal-Tibet border, with homes destroyed, roads swamped, and bridges swept away by surging mud and water.
- More than 1400 people are missing and at least 389 have died in Nepal, with rescue efforts complicated by rain and geography.
- In Tibet, at least 558 people are missing, with three confirmed dead - it's not clear if these figures overlap with Nepal's.
- On both sides of the border, hundreds of foreign nationals are missing - Nepal says that includes 178 tourists from India, 127 from Nepal, 65 Americans, 35 Australians, and 33 from the UK.

Rasuwa Nepal Flood 2026 and its impact on Tourism:
Tibet Tour:
Tibet tour from Nepal have been effected as 30 km of the highway leading to Nepal Tibet border, Kerung border (also known as Gyirong or Rasuwagadhi) have been damaged and bridged swept away. Following the devastation, the border have been closed until another notice. Travelers visiting Mt Kailash and Lahasa via Nepal Tibet border are stranded. While many cancelled the trip, some have changed to fly back from Lhasa.
Effected Treks and alternatives to take :
Langtang Trek :
Most of the highway past Trishuli Bazaar have been damaged and many bridges swept away. This may cause some difficulty for trekkers to access to the trailhead at Syabrubesi. This might take about a month to resume. However there is an alternate route to start the trekking from Dhunche or Thulo Syabru.
Do not cancel or change your Lngtang Trek because of flood at the time locals need more financil aid. It is still possible to take alernative route to the Kyanjin Gompa via Dhunche - Thulo Syabru.

Manaslu Trek:
A bridge crossing Trishuli River along the road to the trail head of Manaslu have been swept away, This will effect Manaslu Trek but there are also alternative road via Benighat and Gorkha Bazaar to reach the trail head. Just plan with enough time for longer road journey with off road vehicle.
1500 Pilgirms to Mt Kailash stranded on Tibet side:
Over 1,500 pilgrims, most of them Indian nationals, have been stranded in Tibet while on the Kailash Mansarovar yatra after a massive flood in the Bhote Koshi River that severely impacted Nepal-China border areas on August 26.
Among the stranded are 700 pilgrims participating in the annual trip to Mt Kailash organized by Sadhguru's Isha Foundation.
As the popular yatra route of Kerung along the Nepal-China border has been completely damaged by the flood, Association of Kailash Tour Operators Nepal, AKTON is looking for other options to rescue stranded pilgrims from Tibet to Nepal.
The most practical option appears to permit them to use the Jomsom route to cross the border in Mustang. Another alternative from Zhangmu route along the Tatopani border was closed following the 2015 earthquake. The Hilsa route will be more remote, time consuming and expensive as they have to use helicopters which requires good weather as well.
AKTON said it is in consultation with government authorities to facilitate coordination with Chinese authorities for the use of the Jomsom route.
According to the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents, 291 foreigners and 93 Nepali Mansarovar pilgrims from 12 different tour agencies are still missing in the flood. At least 92 from Trekkers Society, 71 from Samrat Tours & Travels, 55 from Leaf Holiday, 52 from Himalayan Glacier, 31 from Kailash Journey, 27 from Fishtail Tours & Travels, 20 from Alpine Eco Treks, and seven from Explore Vacation went missing in the Rasuwa area while they were on their way to cross the Kerung border for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Tourism Board has reported 517 foreign nationals and 127 Nepali travellers at Rasuwa area have gone missing on their way to Kailahs Manasoravar Yatra and Gosaikunda Pilgrimage.
